ST EDWARD THE CONFESSOR, the son of Ethelred the Unready, king of England from 1042 to 1066. All the common people and the poor loved him for his justice and care for them, but certain of the nobles, whose depredations were threatened by the King's goodness, attempted, by accusing him of favouring the Normans, to stir up rebellion; In 1050 he began the great Romanesque Abbey Church which is depicted in the Bayeaux Tapestry. It was replaced by Henry III's Gothic building. St Edward was a great benefactor to the Church.
St Edward's feast day is October 13th
