Right Reverend Monsignor Canon Cogun died on 21st January 1955. He had been in failing health for several years and was well prepared for God's call. He received the last Sacraments while fully conscious. "Deus Pater Omnipotens sit ei propitius et clemens. Christus perpetuae det ei gaudia vitae. Requiescat in pace." He was in his 68th year, and had completed 41 years in the Sacred Priesthood.
Ater his ordination in Rome, Monsignor Cogan spent three years as a Professor at Ushaw College and then, from 1917 to 1925 served as an assistant priest at St. Michael's, Newcastle, St. Edward's, Whitley Bay, and St. Aidan's, Willington Quay, until in February 1925 he was appointed Chaplain to the Good Shepherd Convent at Gosforth. Five years later, in February 1930, he was appointed Parish Priest at St. Teresa's, Newcastle, where he remained until July 1933 when he was appointed Parish Priest of St. Michael's, Esh Laude. He was appointed Vicar General of the diocese in February 1937. The Dirge was chanted at St. Michael's, Esh' Laude, on Sunday, 23rd January, at 6 p.m. The burial followed the Pontifical Requiem Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's, Esh Laude, on Monday, 24th January.
